ANGUS ‘SAFE HANDS’ WINCHESTER
Thursday, January 29th, 2009-
admin Says:
January 29th, 2009 at 5:17 pmAs Ueno-san’s ice diamond dropped from the first video, Angus ‘the Gin King’ is there right on cue. You’ll notice that he then spins the ice diamond on the cocktail shaker. This is where we recreated the ice as a 3D computer model and used special effects to make the ice look like it was spinning. This meant matching the reflection of the ice with Angus’s racy pink shirt. He then finishes his sequence by placing the gin on the green-screen shelf. This shelf had to be exactly where the scroll bar would be when the gin appears at the end for Peter Dorelli to serve.

February 10th, 2009 at 2:10 pmIt was an honour to spend the day with such exalted company.
If truth be known my involvement was somewhat influenced by Mr. Calabrese being busy
World Class is by far the most exciting, truly global, programme I have ever had the privilege to be a part of.
Look forward to seeing you all out there!

angus "International gentleman Bartender" Winchester Says:
February 12th, 2009 at 9:14 amBeing part vampire and also total haggard and ugly git I was worried about appearing on film… then they showed me the pink shirt and braces they wanted me to wear (”racey”??).
Then I saw the line up that I was appearing alongside… Ueno-San who is the Ice Master, Difford who really is a walking encyclopedia, the man walker who has been on prime time TV is the USA, Gary Regan who is truly one of the best all round and old scholl bartenders you will ever meet, Mr Menegos (or number Eleven as we Traveling Mixologists call him) and finally the world’s coolest bartender Peter Dorelli… yee gods and little fishes I was in trouble!
But it was easy and seamless and about the most amount of fun I have ever had with my trousers on and without breaking any laws… thank you first to all concerned in this videos making (especially the makeup department and also the patient chap dropping the ice ball) and also for all the kind comments people have said about me… well its really about the video itself but I will take credit where I can (thats the bartender in me I guess…)

SIMON DIFFORD
Thursday, January 29th, 2009-
admin Says:
January 29th, 2009 at 5:17 pmSimon starts on a Ketel One Flip. Notice how he uses the coil from a Hawthorn to really whip up the egg and cream. Just enough egg and cream to throw over the unlucky stage hand who was lying on the floor out of shot ready to catch it, who caught the shaker on the first take but then missed it on the second - and final - take. He ended up with egg on his face, but not the ever-professional Mr Difford who really set the pace for the rest of the shoot.

JAMIE WALKER
Thursday, January 29th, 2009-
admin Says:
January 29th, 2009 at 5:18 pmNext up the cool and calm Jamie Walker. But maybe a little too cool as he completely misjudges the shaker drop from Simon above. To create this we had one of our crew drop the shaker and another catch it below. But even though Jamie misses the catch, he acts fast and his quick thinking gives him an idea. In the film, Jamie rewinds the video player scroll bar, which we marked out with green tape so he could hit his mark. In post production the shaker ‘rewinds’ and flies back up to allow Jamie a second chance to catch it. He then adds ice and ‘flips’ the Ketel One Flip out to Michael.

MICHAEL MENEGOS, MOVER AND SHAKER
Thursday, January 29th, 2009-
admin Says:
January 29th, 2009 at 5:18 pmYou know a bartender knows his bar intimately when he can catch a shaker without looking. Michael makes it look easy but we gave him a little help. A shaker was dropped into his hand from a short distance and using digital effects and a 3D computer model of a shaker, the effect became much more impressive (sorry Michael). The Ketel One Flip is then given a final vigorous shake, but in the film he shakes it so hard the entire screen shakes with it. We created this effect right at the end, by animating the entire screen to match the movement of Michael. Then as he sits the shaker down on the bar, it wobbles out the frame. We did this in post production by mixing separate footage of a spinning cocktail shaker. A simple effect but at the end of a long day it still took five takes.

Michael "Quake Shake" Menegos Says:
February 14th, 2009 at 10:54 pmWhat a lovely day that was!
Although waking up early is not what I do best, meeting old friends and making some new motivated me to skip breakfast and rush to the studios where everything took place.
A brilliant idea for this ad came to reality with the help of an amazing crew that had to put up with seven primadonnas in their finest hour….
A good eighteen hours later packed with plenty of laughs, catching up and the odd pint, found us all celebrating at Simon’s HQ, trying to capture the moves of Ueno San’s hard shake, listening to Peter’s wonderful stories and saying goodnights to those who had an early flight back home.My shoulders still ache from that shake and my stomach hurts from the laughs and that fifth serving of the delicious crumble….
Many, many thanks to all!

GARY REGAN
Thursday, January 29th, 2009-
admin Says:
January 29th, 2009 at 5:19 pmGary Regan - a good old no-nonsense bartender, making a good old no-nonsense cocktail. And done in a good old no-nonsense way. Gary had arguably the simplest of the routines, as he starts to make an Old Fashioned. A dash of Angustura Bitters over sugar cubes is crushed together. He then adds ice and Zacapa rum, poured in Gary’s unique way to add a dash of humour. To finish he gives it a stir then he pours the drink through a strainer. We do the rest by animating 3D liquid out of the frame. An ‘Old Fashioned’ cocktail given a modern twist.

February 11th, 2009 at 2:51 pmWhat a blast I had helping make this video. And you’d never know that I was drunk out of my mind when I did it, would you? Peter Dorelli was crouched down under the bar holding my legs so I wouldn’t fall down and Angus Winchester was standing in front of me chanting “Stay awake, Gaz; Stay awake Gaz . . . ” Itg was pretty surreal.

PETER DORELLI, A GREAT FINISH
Thursday, January 29th, 2009-
admin Says:
January 29th, 2009 at 5:20 pmFrom arguably the easiest routine to definitely the most difficult. It was towards the end of a long day and the cast was flagging, but after a few takes (15!) we got there and Peter Dorelli finished off the greatest round of cocktails ever. Like all the sequences, this had to be done in a single shot, no edits or cutaways. This meant that even though we added lots of computer trickery, Peter had to get everything right in one continual take. First he had to catch the Ketel One Flip (which we dropped into his hand), watch the ice diamond drop into the rocks glass to finish off the Old Fashioned (which Gary pours from above), then reach over to the Martini (which Angus started) that had scrolled down the page. It was all beautifully timed, so that the whole thing ran like clockwork. Then, right at the end when you think it’s all over, our young bartender rocks up out of nowhere, grabs a cocktail stick and stabs the video player scroller like an olive to show that the World Class Competition is about individuality, creativity and flair.

We’ve never seen ice diamonds carved like this. In fact we’ve never seen an ice diamond before! We used eight hand-carved ice diamonds for this take which Ueno-san began to carve from a metre-long block of solid ice as soon as he arrived. The studio lights may have been melting the ice, but Japan’s finest could take the heat and he kept his cool.
